Children

While tourism has grown fast at certain locations in Sámi Homeland, it has caused some highly worrisome side effects. One particularly challenging phenomenon, brought in by visitors, is the harassment of local children. For example, photographing the children near their schools or kindergartens has caused anxiety in children and deep concern in their parents. Children have been chatted to by strangers and offered sweets on their way home from school.

Children are pricelessly important part of responsible and ethically sustainable future. Everyone must provide to the children with safe environment to grow up and move around. Responsible visitors do not cause unwanted changes in local culture through their actions. Visitors must never photograph or give presents to children without their parents’ permission. Not even then when the children look so adorable in their Sámi dress or fur hat.
