The Sámi are the only Indigenous people in the European Union. The status of the Sámi as an Indigenous people is enshrined in the Constitution of Finland. About 6 percent of the world’s population, or 476 million in total, belong to Indigenous peoples. Indigenous peoples live in areas across 90 countries.

Show allThe Sámi Parliament appoints an Executive Board from amongst its members. The board includes as members the President of the Parliament and two Vice-Presidents, as well as five other members. The Executive Board operates under the Plenum, and its main purpose is to be in charge of political activity and administration, and make preparations for the Plenums.
