Sámi Music Centre

The Sámi Music Centre aims to support the preservation and development of traditional Sámi vocal music styles (luohti, leuʹdd, and livđe), and to promote and develop modern Sámi music. The Sámi Music Centre operates under the Sámi Parliament.

The Centre provides Sámi music education, offers opportunities for Sámi music production, develops Sámi musical expertise, organises concerts and other events to promote Sámi music. Regional outreach, inclusion, and accessibility are central to the Centre’s activities.

Music events and concerts in and out of the Sámi homeland give Sámi audiences opportunities to enjoy their musical heritage, while also making Sámi music and culture more well known in the wider population. These events also support the distribution of Sámi artists’ creative work.

The most significant annual event is Ijahis idja (eng. Nightless Night), an Indigenous music festival held in Inari each August. The Sámi Music Centre’s coordinator works as the festival producer, and the Centre plays a key role in organising the event.

The Sámi Music Centre is an active part of the Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos, which provides excellent facilities for the Centre’s operations. The Centre hosts concerts and other music events at Sajos.

The activities of the Sámi Music Centre are guided by an annual action plan approved by the Sámi Parliament’s Executive Board and are funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
